Crumbling shop to be rebuilt
Telford & Wrekin Council is moving forward with a major redevelopment project in Wellington, with demolition work starting on a building that has been empty for almost five years.
The development aims to deliver new jobs, homes, and business units to the market town.
The old, dilapidated building at 2 Walker Street and 15 Duke Street is being torn down. This will make way for a new three-storey building in keeping with the surrounding architecture.
Construction of the new structure in Duke/Crown Street is scheduled to be completed by Autumn 2026. The upper floors will house residential accommodation, with a new retail space on the ground floor.
Local contractor Pave Aways is carrying out the works. This includes groundworks, underpinning, and erecting a new steel-framed masonry structure.
The development is funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and central government.
Pave Aways are taking steps to minimise noise, dust, and disruption during the works. Surrounding businesses will remain open as usual.
Pedestrian access around the site will be maintained at all times, with safe and clear routes ensured for the public.
This is part of the Council’s Investing in Telford and Wrekin programme. It is seeing a total of £300 million invested into new developments across the borough, including Station Quarter in Telford Town Centre and Oakengates.
