Power struggle at Wrockwardine Parish Council

At a meeting of Wrockwardine Parish Council this week, members were told by the clerk that the supplier of electricity for street lights had gone out of business.

She explained that it would be difficult to find another supplier because the contract was too small to interest a major supplier. “The lights are going to go out”  joked the clerk.

There were already proposals to hand back 91 street lights in the parish to Telford and Wrekin Council, but this was still in negotiation.

According to the clerk, Ofgem say supply will continue uninterrupted and the supply has been handed to British Gas.  Due to the nature of the system in place for the streetlights, electricity is unmetered.  This limits the number of energy companies that will take on these types of accounts and said that British Gas are probably unaware that it’s an unmetered account.

Councillor Thomas considered the risk of any price increase resulting in a supplier change and commented that the cost of electricity is ‘a key part of the budget for the Parish Council’

The clerk later confirmed that the lights won’t go out.
