Electrical course sparks a renewable energy venture into life

An electrical business has launched a new renewable energy division after its directors completed a training course at Telford College.

Matthew Hicks and Jake Jones from Voltium Electrical Services enrolled on a Solar PV and Electrical Energy Storage course at Telford College – passing with flying colours.

The skills and expertise gained have led to the launch of a new division of their Dawley-based business called Voltium Renewables, which is dedicated to delivering cutting-edge renewable energy solutions designed to reduce carbon footprints and support a more sustainable future.

Jake and Matthew both have a long-standing connection with Telford College, having each completed their electrical apprenticeships there.

They say the technical knowledge and guidance they received provided the foundation for establishing and growing their jointly-run electrical services company, which continues to expand in capability, size, and reputation.

They said: “Our time on the course was excellent. The training was highly informative and gave us the confidence to take on new technologies and systems straight away. Since completing the course, we have successfully installed multiple PV systems to a high standard.

“Telford College played a significant role in our development within the industry and in helping us build the business we have today.

“We are now proud to be in a position to give back by taking on our own apprentice, Archie, through the college. Supporting local training and helping to create skilled career opportunities within the community is very important to us.”

Jake and Matthew remain jointly involved in the ongoing development and strategic direction of the company, working together to strengthen its services and presence across the region.

Luke Foster, specialist tutor in technology for the environmental and sustainability sector at Telford College, said: “We have had some superb success rates on our courses so far this year, and some brilliant feedback.

“Latest results include 100% pass rates on our solar PV and electrical energy storage courses, 98% for electrical vehicle charging equipment, and 97% for our 18th edition wiring regulations programme.”

He added: “With solar PV booming, more people are looking to electrical energy storage systems for their homes. Our training equips electricians with the skills to meet this growing demand.

“Our bootcamp-style sessions are a one-stop shop for photovoltaic systems, battery storage and EV charging installation training. It’s not just about skills… it’s about sustainability, innovation, and regional resilience, futureproofing the region’s workforce.

“We’re proud to be at the forefront of renewable energy education, helping local professionals lead the UK’s green transition. These programmes can be a real game-changer for tradespeople looking to diversify, upskill, and thrive in a low-carbon economy.”
