Head Boy Joe finishes swim challenge
A student at Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby has completed a massive 21-mile swimming challenge this month, raising a remarkable amount of money for Cancer Research UK.
Joe Costello, 17, finished his final lengths on Saturday morning, achieving his goal of swimming the equivalent width of the English Channel.
Joe, who is the school’s head boy, had originally set a fundraising target of £1,000. He quickly passed this goal before he even started swimming. The total raised now stands at an impressive £2,550, including Gift Aid, and donations are still being accepted.
He said it had been difficult at times to fit the demanding challenge around his school work, band practice, and running training. Joe added that to accomplish what he set out to do has been “fantastic.”
The student also hopes his efforts have raised significant awareness for cancer. He said he further hopes he has been able to support all those in the community currently battling the disease.
Joe recently had the chance to meet with the MP for Telford, Shaun Davies. On Thursday afternoon, the MP congratulated Joe on his achievement, presenting him with a certificate for his efforts.
Joe’s fundraising page remains open for further contributions. Donations can be made at: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/joes-fundraising-page-swimming-21-miles-the-width-of-the-english-channel
