New inclusive living development in Ironbridge

A new supported living scheme has welcomed its first residents in Ironbridge. The Heritage Walk development includes 12 purpose-built supported living homes, developed by Telford & Wrekin Council in partnership with the learning disability charity Hft and housebuilder Lioncourt Homes.

The new approach involved redeveloping three existing residential care services into the new housing. This move allows former residents of the care services to transition into their own homes, intended to promote independence and choice.

These properties are part of a wider development of 80 homes, aiming to create an inclusive environment where adults with learning disabilities can live alongside their neighbours. The project involved a decade of planning and a year of construction.

Tom, Simon, Abigail, and Joanne are among the first residents to move in. The Council reports that adults with learning disabilities were involved in the process, from the initial design concepts to selecting interior finishes and choosing housemates.

Tom, 39, who works as a chef in a local café, said: “I am so excited about the move into my new home. I’ve been looking forward to it for a long time. Moving into supported living will give me a new lease of life and the freedom to do new things. It will give me more independence.”

Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health & Healthier Communities, said: “This development embodies everything we stand for at Telford & Wrekin Council – protecting the wellbeing of our residents, caring for those who need support, and investing in innovative solutions that improve lives.”

“Heritage Walk shows what can be achieved when partners work together with a shared vision of creating inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to live well, independently and with dignity. We are delighted to see these first residents making their new houses into homes.”

A formal opening ceremony was held on 29 October, with the Shropshire Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Mandy Thorn MBE, cutting the ribbon alongside Amanda Bunce, Hft Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Rachel Cartwight, Land Director at Lioncourt Homes, said: “We are incredibly proud to have partnered with Hft to deliver an important part of this excellent development. To see the first residents moving in and making these houses their homes is hugely rewarding.”

Hft Chief Executive Officer Steve Veevers said: “Hft’s pioneering partnership with the people we support and Lioncourt Homes is groundbreaking and showcases the future for person-centred support and independence.”

The development is part of the Council’s effort to ensure adults with care needs have access to high-quality housing options that support independence and community integration.
