Telford cyclists fare better in recently released collision data

New data has highlighted regional road safety, revealing that more than 150 cyclists were injured in traffic collisions across the West Mercia Police area over the last year. While Shropshire tops the list with 45 injuries, Telford & Wrekin is in third place, recording 22.

Shropshire recorded the highest number of casualties with 45 incidents, followed by Herefordshire, which saw 29

Figures secured by Advice.co.uk confirm that West Mercia Police recorded a total of 168 cyclist casualties during the 2024/25 reporting period.

Of the 168 recorded incidents, the outcomes for riders were often severe. The police data logged two fatalities, 51 serious injuries and 115 slight injuries.

With a growing number of riders navigating urban centres and fast-moving rural lanes, safety advocates warn that local infrastructure is struggling to cope with increased participation.

Tracy Chick, Road Traffic Accident Manager at JF Law, said: “Cyclist injury levels across the UK are still far too high. Many crashes could be prevented; they often stem from driver inattention, worn-out road surfaces, and a lack of safe, dedicated cycling routes.

“The consequences for cyclists can be extremely serious. From broken bones and head injuries to long-term emotional and financial strain, the impact of a collision is often life-changing.”

The situation in West Mercia reflects a concerning national pattern: cyclists remain among the most exposed users on the UK road network.

Advice.co.uk’s analysis of the regional collision data identified specific areas with higher incident rates. Shropshire recorded the highest number of casualties with 45 incidents, followed by Herefordshire, which saw 29.

Tracy Chick added: “As more people take up cycling across the UK, improving road safety and ensuring justice for injured cyclists must remain a national priority. It’s vital that anyone injured in a cycling accident understands their rights and seeks legal advice as soon as possible.”

Advice.co.uk provides expert claim and legal advice services for cyclists who may have been involved in a road accident.

They operate a 24-hour helpline and an online claim form, which can be accessed on their website.
