Council tax amnesty for single residents who have not updated their records
Telford and Wrekin residents are being urged to check their council tax records during a new amnesty. The two-week window is running from Monday 8 December to Sunday 21 December 2025.
People who currently receive the Single Person Discount on their council tax have the chance to notify the council of any changes to their household circumstances. The amnesty is taking place across the borough.
Telford & Wrekin Council reviews claims for the 25% discount annually to make sure they are still valid. Changes that would affect eligibility include an adult child returning home, a partner or lodger moving in, or finishing full-time education.
Councillor Zona Hannington, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Governance and Customer Services, explained the scheme.
“We know that most people claiming Single Person Discount are doing so correctly. But if your circumstances have changed, this amnesty gives you the chance to update your details,” Councillor Hannington said.
She added that by acting now, residents can avoid being “caught out in the future and potentially facing fines or prosecution.” The Council’s aim is to make it easy for people to ensure the council tax system remains fair for everyone in Telford and Wrekin.
Residents who update their details during the amnesty will have to repay any backdated council tax. Crucially, they will not face additional fines or potential prosecution.
To update records, residents can visit www.telford.gov.uk/mycounciltax, email council.tax@telford.gov.uk with the subject line “SPD Amnesty”, or call 01952 383838 to speak to an advisor.
