Council officers seize music equipment after noise complaints

The peace in Market Street, Oakengates has been restored after council officers seized a haul of entertainment equipment.

The move followed repeated breaches of a noise abatement notice that had previously been served to the occupier.

Environmental Protection officers applied for a warrant of entry at Telford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 17 December. The application was made under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 after reports of amplified music continued to cause a statutory nuisance.

The warrant was granted the same morning, and by 2pm that afternoon, officers entered the property supported by West Mercia Police. Although a locksmith was on standby as a precaution, the occupier allowed the team inside without the need for forced entry.

A TV, DJ deck, and various speakers were among the items taken away. Every piece of equipment was photographed and inventoried by the team as part of the enforcement process.

This action is part of the work by Telford & Wrekin Council to tackle anti-social behaviour and protect residents from persistent disturbances.

Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement said: “Residents have the right to feel safe and comfortable in their homes.

“Where individuals repeatedly ignore formal warnings and continue to cause serious disturbance, the council will take appropriate enforcement action. The seizure of noise‑making equipment is always a last resort, but it is an effective tool to stop persistent nuisance and protect the wider community.”

Council staff have reminded locals that many people are unaware they are causing a problem and will often change their behaviour if asked politely. However, for more serious cases, issues such as loud music or barking dogs can be reported through the council website.
