MP invites families to SEND event at zoo

A special event for families in Telford living with special educational needs and disabilities is being held at the Exotic Zoo.

Organised by the local MP, the day follows a previous roundtable meeting held last year. It is intended to give residents a chance to discuss their experiences with services ahead of a planned government consultation on SEND funding and reform.

Attendees will be given free entry to the zoo as part of a partnership between the MP and the attraction, though places must be booked in advance.

Feedback from a similar meeting in late 2025 suggested that education and support remain the primary concerns for local parents.

The Telford MP said that the current system needs reform and increased funding. He added that while some families in the town benefit from high-quality provision, the ambition is to make that support consistent for every child.

Jayne Stevens, from the PODs Parent Carer Forum, said: “PODs Parent Carer Forum were delighted to host Shaun’s SEND roundtable late last year, and we’re pleased to see this upcoming event for local SEND families. It will be a valuable opportunity for families to share their experiences, provide feedback, and contribute ideas to help strengthen education and social care support in our community.”

The event comes as the government prepares a white paper for early 2026. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said that inclusion should be at the heart of the system so that every child can achieve and thrive.
