Telford MP pays tribute to local figures in Parliamentary speech
Telford MP Shaun Davies used a recent Parliamentary speech to shine a light on the people and businesses that make the town work.
The debate focused on the contribution of New Towns. Davies tracked the town’s history from the Industrial Revolution to its modern status. He gave specific credit to Marcus Keane of Telford Memories, Dennis Athersmith of Dawley Memories, and Steve Bowers of Telford Ultimate Guide for their work preserving local history.
The MP described Telford as a unique place. He noted the town’s strong housebuilding record and its abundance of green spaces. He credited Richard Shaw for his vital role in local conservation efforts.
The speech highlighted Telford as a hub for manufacturing. Davies name-checked major employers Bridge Cheese and Besblock Ltd as success stories.
However, the MP did not shy away from modern challenges. He pointed to ageing infrastructure and under-investment. He praised the frontline work of Telford Crisis Support, Telford Community Support, and The Anstice in Madeley. Dan Blasczyk was also singled out for his contribution to the community.
Davies called on the Government to support existing New Towns while they plan for new ones. He formally invited Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook MP to visit Telford.
Shaun Davies MP said: “Telford is a thriving New Town, and I am so proud to call it my home. It was a privilege to be able to give some recognition to a few of the people and groups who have helped make Telford great – I only wish I could have spoken for much longer and named about 30 more.
“Whilst the Governments quest to build more new towns, like ours, is a great move, I urge them not to forget about the pre-existing new towns who still need support to continue to grow – and I will work hard to make that happen for our town.”
