Council welcomes step-free access plan for Wellington Railway Station

Telford & Wrekin Council has welcomed new plans to improve accessibility at Wellington Railway Station. Network Rail has submitted proposals to install two passenger lifts.

The work aims to provide step-free access between platforms and Wellington Bus Station. These plans are part of the national Access for All programme.

The Council has campaigned for these improvements for many years. The scheme was first promised in 2018. Since then, local leaders have pushed for a direct link to the bus station. This link was not included in the original designs.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We have consistently called for improved accessibility at Wellington Railway Station and welcome the Government taking this positive step forward after it was originally promised in 2018.

“Providing step-free access between platforms and the Bus Station would greatly improve accessibility for passengers and help ensure the station is accessible for everyone. We have been proactive with Network Rail to ensure they incorporate the direct link to the Bus Station.

“The railway station plays an important role in Wellington and improving connections between rail and bus services is vital. We look forward to seeing the scheme progress”.

Improved access will make travel easier for residents and visitors with mobility needs. The station sits next to the bus station. Better links will support travel connections across the town.
