Work begins on new accessible homes in Telford

Construction has begun on a new development in Telford, which will provide 15 fully wheelchair accessible homes for social rent.

The homes are being built for Housing Plus Group by Telford-based Bespoke Construction. The development will include 15 one-bedroom apartments, designed to provide accessible homes for wheelchair users and over 55s close to Telford’s town centre.

It will bring an area of brownfield land, next to the Randlay Community Centre, into positive use for much-needed affordable housing and has been designed to blend sensitively with the local community.

The project is expected to be completed by spring 2027 and reflects Housing Plus Group’s ongoing commitment to creating places people are proud to call home – offering security, independence and community, especially for those who need accessible living options.

Joshua Lovell, Project Manager at Housing Plus Group, said: “Telford is in urgent need of new affordable and accessible homes to address the shortage of suitable accommodation for residents who are wheelchair users.

“This project is a great example of how Housing Plus Group is working to address the demand for new and affordable homes in the town and we believe it will be a very welcome addition to the Telford community upon completion next year.”

The development will also include electric heating and solar PV panels to produce low-cost, sustainable energy and significantly reduce carbon emission. As well as charging points for electric vehicles and level access, private gardens.

Marvin Bennett, Managing Director at Bespoke Construction, said: “We’re proud to be delivering this much-needed accessible housing scheme in Telford in partnership with Housing Plus Group. By transforming a brownfield site into sustainable, energy-efficient apartments designed specifically for wheelchair users and over-55s, we’re helping to meet a clear and growing need within the local community.

“We look forward to handing over these new homes that will provide comfort, independence and long-term security for the residents.”

Housing Plus Group was awarded £1,300,000 in funding from Homes England for the project.

Over 27,000 disabled people in Telford in the 50+age bracket. Many, including myself, with a disabled teenager at home, and who will be at home, possible for the rest of our lives. 1 bedroom places, will barely touch the sides. While they should be welcomed, Government, local and national, along with housing providers need to do much better than this!
