Telford and Wrekin Council hits target to bring 375 empty homes back into use
Telford & Wrekin Council has successfully restored 375 long-term empty properties, meeting its housing target ahead of schedule.
The milestone marks a significant step in the local authority’s efforts to boost the supply of quality housing and address issues such as fly-tipping and antisocial behaviour often associated with derelict sites.
Since the launch of the long-term empty property strategy in 2021, the council has focused on properties that have been left vacant for extended periods.
Of the 375 homes now back in use, the council acquired 111 specifically to provide specialist accommodation for vulnerable residents. These properties are being utilised through the Next Steps initiative and other supported housing programmes.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement, said: “Empty homes don’t help anyone. They can fall into disrepair, attract fly-tipping and cause real problems for neighbours when they are left unused for long periods. That’s why we made a clear commitment to tackle long-term empty properties and bring them back into use.
“When we launched our Long-Term Empty Property Strategy in 2021, we set out to bring at least 375 empty homes back into use. I’m pleased that, working with property owners and our dedicated team, we have now reached that target.
“Our Empty Property Team has worked tirelessly over the last five years to work with property owners, use enforcement action where necessary, support our local communities and ultimately turn hundreds of empty properties back into warm and inviting homes.”
The strategy relies heavily on the work of a dedicated team that provides advice and support to property owners.
To assist with renovation costs, the council has promoted the use of the local credit union for low-cost loans. In more complex cases, the team has assisted beneficiaries of deceased estates through the probate process.
While support is the primary focus, the council has also utilised enforcement action where properties remained empty for long periods and negatively impacted the surrounding neighbourhood.
