Man sentenced for racially aggravated harassment and shoplifting

A man from Regent Street in Wellington has appeared before Telford Magistrates’ Court to face sentencing for a series of offences, including a racially aggravated attack on a police officer and multiple thefts from a high street retailer.

Robert Wilson, 35, of Regent Street, appeared in court on 10 March 2026, where he was dealt with for a string of incidents dating back to 2023.

The court heard that on 20 December 2023, Wilson targeted a police officer in Telford. During the incident, he used threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause the officer harassment, alarm, or distress. The court found that this offence was racially aggravated. In addition to the harassment charge, Wilson was sentenced for two counts of theft from a shop.

These offences took place in Aberystwyth in November 2025, where he stole items, including a pair of boots, from Mountain Warehouse to the total value of £124.98. Wilson also faced a charge of failing to surrender to police or court bail after missing a scheduled appearance at Telford Magistrates’ Court on 13 November 2025.

For the racially aggravated harassment, Wilson was handed a community order which will run until March 2027. This includes a nine-month non-residential drug rehabilitation requirement and a requirement to participate in up to 15 days of rehabilitation activities. He was also ordered to pay £50 in compensation.

For the shoplifting offences, he received similar community order requirements to run concurrently, with the court noting that his guilty pleas were taken into account.

No separate penalty was issued for the bail act offence.
