Birmingham man jailed after drug driving at Telford Shopping Centre

A Birmingham man has been handed a custodial sentence after being caught drug driving in Telford.

Theo Kelly, of Overbury Road, appeared before Telford Magistrates’ Court on 12 March 2026 to face charges following an incident late last year.

The court heard that on 7 November 2025, the 30-year-old was driving a 25 plate white BMW 320i M Sport Auto near Telford Shopping Centre. Following a stop, tests revealed that Kelly had a proportion of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a derivative of cannabis, in his blood. The reading of 3.2ug exceeded the specified legal limit.

Kelly pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.

In sentencing, the magistrates noted that the defendant’s credit for a guilty plea had been taken into account but determined that the seriousness of the offence warranted immediate imprisonment.

The court stated that the custodial sentence was justified because the number and nature of the offences showed that the defendant was operating as a professional criminal. Kelly was sentenced to two weeks in prison.

In addition to the jail term, Kelly was hit with an obligatory driving disqualification lasting three years.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service and a victim surcharge of £154. A collection order was made with the total sum due to be paid in full by May 2026.
