“He’s BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!” – Agent Stone (Sonic the Hedgehog 2)
This week, Paramount Pictures dropped a brand-new teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, set to hit cinemas in March 2027—and while the footage itself is brief, it’s packed with just enough to send fans into a frenzy.
The teaser opens with Amy’s hammer flying directly toward the screen, before smashing through to reveal the iconic Chaos Emeralds. Each emerald highlights a key character from the Sonic film universe—Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Tom, Maddie, Shadow, and Amy herself—reinforcing just how expansive this series has become.
But one emerald in particular has everyone talking.
Jim Carrey’s Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
The teaser also features new narration from Carrey, alongside confirmation of a stacked returning cast including Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, Kristen Bell, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Lee Majdoub, Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade.
And then comes the surprise that isn’t really a surprise—but still feels like one:
Jim Carrey is officially back.
For a fourth time.
And that’s where this stops being normal sequel news.
For years, Carrey has had an unofficial “no sequel” tendency, with only a handful of his films—Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber—ever receiving direct follow-ups with his involvement. He famously stepped away from projects like Son of the Mask, reinforcing the idea that repetition simply wasn’t part of his creative identity.
Yet the Sonic franchise has quietly rewritten that rule.
Not only did Carrey return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he took on a dual role as both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik—doubling down on a performance style that feels more alive than anything he’s done in years.
And now, he’s doing it again.
Back in 2022, while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey stated he was “fairly serious” about retiring, suggesting his career had reached a natural endpoint. He even joked that he would only return if a script came along that was “written in gold ink.”
Well, either Paramount found that script—or the definition of “gold” has changed.
Because Carrey isn’t just returning. He’s committing.
Four films into a franchise that, by all logic, he should have walked away from.
Which raises the real question:
Should Robotnik have stayed “dead” after Sonic the Hedgehog 3, or is his return exactly what this franchise needs to keep its identity intact?
Because whether you see it as fan service or creative necessity, one thing is clear—
He’s back.
And honestly?
That might be the most important reveal the teaser had to offer.
Don’t miss Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in cinemas, March 2027.
