Council grant boosts charity pantomime

The Crown Players have received a £1,500 grant from Wellington Town Council as they prepare for a new production.

The theatre group is a non-profit organisation that donates its proceeds to local causes. Last year, they donated £12,500 to the hospice following their production of Mother Goose.

AFC Telford United Foundation has launched the initiative which is aimed at young people who want to change direction in their lives and who may be at risk of antisocial behaviour, county lines exploitation, and criminal involvement.

Sessions will run every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and are completely free to attend. The long-term ambition is to form a competitive Under-16s team and enter a local league next season, giving participants a clear pathway, purpose, and sense of belonging.

Hospital Trust becomes approved activity provider for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Volunteers aged 14-16 years-old will be able to help with fundraising and preparations for events for the Trust’s charity, SaTH Charity, based at William Farr House in Shrewsbury.

Volunteers who are aged 16-18 years-old, in addition to the opportunities for under 16s, can also undertake meet and greet, companionship, and ward support roles. Volunteers aged over 18 years-old can become a volunteer driver or drive the patient transport buggy, as well as take on x-ray and A&E support roles.

Telford MP joins Mountain Rescue

Shaun Davies Member of Parliament for Telford has been selected to a parliamentary scheme designed to give MPs first-hand experience of the vital work carried out by the emergency services.

Shaun has so far visited the London Fire Brigade and the Mountain Rescue Team in the Scottish Highlands observing operations and speaking directly with emergency service personnel, gaining insight into issues such as funding, staffing, training, wellbeing, and the increasing demands placed on services.

Stabilising bridge repairs completed before spawning season

Construction specialists McPhillips successfully completed repairs to a bridge over the River Meese in Telford before the start of the all-important fish spawning season.

Fish within the working area had to be gently removed and relocated prior to the start of stabilising and strengthening works to the single span masonry arch Sheep Bridge on the B429 in Cherrington.

​Waiting for a bus at the Humbers is a bit different these days. The local shelter has been turned into a library where people can pick up a new book while they wait.

Lilleshall Parish Council set up the library in 2021, and it was opened by the High Sheriff of Shropshire. The mural was painted by Rick Shaw Designs and a local carpenter made the shelves.

New town centre team for Wellington amongst West Mercia reshuffle

Specific changes in Wellington include the introduction of a new dedicated Town Centre Team. This unit, consisting of two police officers, will focus on tackling anti-social behaviour and retail crime in the town centre.

Other parts of the borough are also set for an uplift in numbers. The Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Ketley & Oakengates team will each receive an additional police constable to support their work.
