Fire chiefs set aside more cash as national pay talks loom

Last year the Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority estimated that a national agreement would lead to a pay award of two per cent – but staff were given a 3.2 per cent increase instead.

Council issues further Urgent Works Notice to protect historic hotel

Whilst carrying out the latest urgent repair work after the owners failed to do so, Telford & Wrekin Council’s contractors have identified further issues which have necessitated the issuing of another Urgent Works Notice, which was served on 12 November 2025.

This latest enforcement action will be completed by the Council’s contractors, who are already on site carrying out the previous urgent work. Telford & Wrekin Council will be seeking to recover the cost for this extra work, along with the ongoing and previous work, from the owners.

Would you like to see tighter controls on HMOs?

Now the council has set a date of December 4 this year, when its ruling Labour cabinet is set to make what it calls key decisions on both the housing strategy and on new moves in the market for HMOs.

In other council areas, such as Walsall and Birmingham, Article 4 directions (A4D) mean that homeowners who want to convert houses into HMOs for up to six tenants lose permitted development rights and have to apply for planning permission.

Popular pub opens again after revamp

The Wrekin Giant pub has welcomed customers back after a refurbishment that cost a six-figure sum. Located in Southwater Square, the Hungry Horse pub has new furniture, lighting, and décor.

To celebrate the reopening, the pub invited the mental health group Primal Instincts to cut the ribbon. The group, founded in 2023, gives men safe spaces to discuss their mental health. The pub also made a donation to the group to support its community efforts.

No speed cameras for A41

A report delivered to the Police and Crime Panel said that PCC John Campion “has expressed frustration” over the lack of progress over delivering the scheme on the 26.7 mile route of the A41 between the M54 at Tong and the Prees roundabout near Whitchurch.

It comes after a report jointly commissioned by Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council concluded that an an average speed camera scheme for the road is not recommended.

44 months for drug dealer who made £5k a day

Andrew Lane, of Laburnam Lane in Telford, was sentenced on Friday (31 October) at Shrewsbury Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs.

During a police interview Lane admitted to making £5,000 a day from selling drugs, which he used to fund his lavish lifestyle, often enjoying holidays abroad to Mexico, Turkey and The Netherlands.

An ombudsman has thrown out a woman’s complaint that Telford & Wrekin Council had failed to consider her circumstances before taking court action over years of council tax arrears.

Court action was initiated against the woman, referred to as ‘Mrs X’, and she took her complaint about the council’s pursuit of “significant council tax arrears” from 2009 to 2024 to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman.

Council vows to protect care for elderly residents

Telford & Wrekin Council is prioritising support for vulnerable people, particularly the elderly, as it grapples with a significant challenge to its budget due to soaring adult social care costs.

The Council’s Cabinet will next week review a financial monitoring report that outlines in-year pressures, the largest of which is in adult social care. This service, which was allocated £77 million at the start of the financial year, is now forecast to require an additional £14 million by the end of March 2026.
