Telford community centre recommended for approval despite concerns

A petition and other public objections to the new Lawley & Overdale Parish Council building at Bryce Way have been lodged with Telford & Wrekin Council’s planning committee.

Parish council documents reveal that local Band D council taxes in the parish will rise by about 44p a week to help the project proceed. The money will be needed to pay off a 40-year loan with an annual fixed rate of £263,113 per annum.

The Telford & Wrekin Council officials consider that the property in one of the towns premier streets would classify as a change of use and that they need to consider the impact it would have on the area.

Applicant Ibukun Makinde, of Felyx Capital Limited, in Sutton Coldfield, acting for Prosper Supported Living Services, had said there is “no material difference in planning terms between the proposed use and the current use as a dwelling.”

Signs go up on new store for Telford

The signs are up for a new furniture store in Telford. The Cotswold Company is preparing to open an outlet shop in Telford on the Forge Retail Park, next to Costa.

The brand, which started in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water in 1996, is bringing its range of handcrafted furniture and homeware to the town as part of a national expansion of its physical showrooms.

After the meeting Councillor Janke posted on social media that creating a local nature reserve is a “significant milestone and will help ensure these much-loved green spaces are properly protected against development in the future, including any extension of the car park.”

Fire crews attend house as bedroom blazes

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 5.57pm on Thursday, mobilising three fire appliances to the scene which is right beside the new Lidl store which opened just before Christmas.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a small fire within a bedroom. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet and a covering jet to extinguish the flames.

Police investigate reported Christmas Eve rape in Ironbridge

Detectives have launched an investigation after a report that a woman was raped in a forest area near Castle Green Cemetery off Lincoln Hill in Ironbridge on Christmas Eve.

Police are now looking to identify a man they believe is the suspect. He is described as white, around 5ft 10in tall, with short dark hair. He was wearing dark jeans and a black coat at the time of the incident.
