Ambulance handover struggles continue as RSH/PRH rank bottom

Figures show that 69 patients spent more than eight hours in ambulances waiting to be admitted to Shropshire’s acute hospitals last December.

Ned Hobbs, SaTH’s chief operating officer, said: “We are very sorry that some of our patients have experienced longer waiting times to receive handover from the ambulance service to our emergency departments, and longer waiting times to be admitted to our hospitals than we would want.”

Search starts for independent chair to lead £30m project

Telford & Wrekin Council has begun the search for an independent chair to head up a new board overseeing a £30 million investment into the south of the town.

The Pride in Place South Telford Neighbourhood Board will lead a ten-year programme focused on Woodside, Brookside and Sutton Hill. The funding includes £20 million from the government and a further £10 million from the council.

Charity CEO earns a Shropshire High Sheriff award

Wayne Jenson, CEO of Meeting Point House, was the recipient of a 2026 High Sheriff’s Award In recognition of his ‘great and valuable service to the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin community.’ 

Wayne was one of several volunteers and organisations who received awards at a ceremony at Telford’s Central Fire Station last week. The award was presented by Jane Trowbridge, High Sheriff of Shropshire, with Anna Turner, Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, in attendance.

Free under-16s football and mentoring programme launched

AFC Telford United Foundation has launched the initiative which is aimed at young people who want to change direction in their lives and who may be at risk of antisocial behaviour, county lines exploitation, and criminal involvement.

Sessions will run every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and are completely free to attend. The long-term ambition is to form a competitive Under-16s team and enter a local league next season, giving participants a clear pathway, purpose, and sense of belonging.

Hospital Trust becomes approved activity provider for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Volunteers aged 14-16 years-old will be able to help with fundraising and preparations for events for the Trust’s charity, SaTH Charity, based at William Farr House in Shrewsbury.

Volunteers who are aged 16-18 years-old, in addition to the opportunities for under 16s, can also undertake meet and greet, companionship, and ward support roles. Volunteers aged over 18 years-old can become a volunteer driver or drive the patient transport buggy, as well as take on x-ray and A&E support roles.

​Waiting for a bus at the Humbers is a bit different these days. The local shelter has been turned into a library where people can pick up a new book while they wait.

Lilleshall Parish Council set up the library in 2021, and it was opened by the High Sheriff of Shropshire. The mural was painted by Rick Shaw Designs and a local carpenter made the shelves.

Dawley students turn reporters for writing contest

Year 6 pupils at Captain Webb Primary School in Dawley have been showcasing their creative talents this month. The school recently reached out to share the work of their young writers following a similar project held last year.

The winning entry from Ariella was a completely independent piece of work. She described the student as a talented writer and said the school is excited to see what she creates in the future.

Memorial bench for volunteer gardener who died suddenly aged 40

Chris Nutt, who worked at Fujitsu and initiated the firm sending volunteers to the Friends of Telford Town Park (FOTTP) group as part of a staff welfare programme, died suddenly in December 2024, aged 40.

A bench in memory of him has now been installed by Fujitsu and the Friends as they were so grateful for the work he did and wanted to honour him.

Members of the charity’s Khushdil Day Centre, based at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Hadley, have enthusiastically risen to the challenge. Through a series of fundraising activities, they have already raised more than £1,900 to support older people throughout Shropshire.
