The Telford Apprenticeship Show

Telford & Wrekin Council’s Job Box programme and the Army will mark National Apprenticeship Week (14–18 MAR) when they host The Apprenticeship Show.

The Apprenticeship Show will showcase opportunities in the Army and civilian sectors.

The British Army is the UK’s biggest provider of apprenticeships and offers over 40 different schemes including catering, IT, bricklaying, logistics, construction, engineering and animal care.

Local businesses signed up for the event include The Wrekin Housing Trust, Epson, CapGemini, NHS, Jaguar Land Rover, Babcock, TDS Academy, Fabweld, Ricoh and Grainger and Worrall.

Those attending will be able to try out hands on activities on the stands, while also getting advice and guidance on apprenticeships, including information on career pathways.

All pupils in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 at schools in the borough have been invited to attend the event to find out about the apprenticeship opportunities available to them.

Councillor Gilly Reynolds, cabinet member for employment and skills, said: “We hope the event will dispel some of the misconceptions around apprenticeships, for example that they are only for 16 year olds. The Army offers apprenticeships up to 32 years and many firms will consider anyone, regardless of age.

“We will have lots of local and national employers at the Apprenticeship Show with opportunities for people to apply for and find out more about.”

Ruth South, Head of Graduate, Apprentice and Placement Programmes at Capgemini, said: “Capgemini’s Degree Apprenticeship programme enables young people to build both the academic and practical skills necessary for success in the tech sector, while also helping to create the talent needed to boost the UK’s digital economy.

“At Capgemini we are committed to nurturing young talent and are proud to be working at the forefront of this industry-wide initiative that will help the UK to compete on the global stage.

“We recognise that apprentices bring a huge amount of value to our business and we are looking forward to meeting with the next generation of talent at The Apprenticeship Show.”

Paula Carter, Group Learning and Development Manager at Stadco Ltd, said: “At Stadco, we’re committed to supporting and engaging with the communities that it operates in and strives to become the employer of choice within those communities.

“We recognise that our workforce is our most important asset and paramount to the ongoing success of our Company.

“Investing in young people through Apprenticeships and developing the engineers of tomorrow is essential to ensuring Stadco has the skills it needs to succeed, now and in the future and we are delighted to be part of The apprenticeship Show in Telford and to offer young, talented, local individuals opportunities to join, train and develop their careers with Stadco.”

The Apprenticeship Show is on Thursday 17 March 2016, at The International Centre, Telford from 10am – 7.30pm.
