Telford shoplifter jailed after meat and laundry detergent theft spree

A man has been handed a custodial sentence following a series of thefts from a Tesco store in Telford earlier this month.

Gareth Jones, 39, appeared before Telford Magistrates’ Court on 19 March 2026, where he faced seven counts of theft from a shop.

The court heard that Jones targeted the supermarket over a period of eight days, beginning on 8 March. During the spree, he stole a variety of items including meat products, laundry detergents, chocolate, and orange juice.

The value of the stolen goods across the different dates ranged from £2.50 for orange juice to £70 for a haul of meat, laundry products, and chocolate.

Jones pleaded guilty to all charges during the first hearing. The court was told that the offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified.

For each of the seven offences, Jones was sentenced to three weeks in prison, to run consecutively, resulting in a total custodial period of 21 weeks. The court took his guilty pleas into account when determining the sentence.

In addition to the prison term, Jones was ordered to pay compensation totalling £297.50. No order for costs was made, as the court decided that the custodial sentence and the priority of compensation took precedence.
