Shannon is loving life as a front-line carer

Telford College health and social care student Shannon Yorke has joined the army of carers offering front-line support to vulnerable people during the Covid-19 crisis.

The 19-year-old was taken on by the Morris Care centre in Wellington after impressing during her first-year college placement, and has been working there ever since.

The former Ercall Wood student has since completed her level two health and social care courses at Telford College, and is nearing the end of her level three studies.
“I always said I never wanted to do care, but since doing it I absolutely love it,” said Shannon, whose ultimate career aim is to become a mental health nurse in the army.

“My favourite part of the Telford College course has been learning new units to do with health that you wouldn’t really expect.

“In my first year of college I did a placement at the Morris Care centre and they offered me a job as a steward. Once I turned 18, I started doing care.

“I’ve made a few good friends through my time at Telford College; it was a good experience. People studying health and social care will learn so much.”

Sarah Cadenne de Lannoy, learner manager for health, early years and education at the college, said: “Shannon has worked really hard to balance employment and study, and achieve good grades.

“She has really matured, and I am proud to see the hard work and dedication she has shown – both in college and now, whilst being on the front line as a carer.”
Telford College is one of the region’s largest further education colleges, with around 3,000 full and part-time students, plus more than 1,100 apprentices.

The college has found creative new ways of delivering its curriculum during lockdown, and the application process is now under way for the 2020/21 academic year, starting in September.
