Social distanced protest at the MP offices

On Saturday 30 May, as part of a nationwide action,Telford Extinction Rebellion protested outside the offices of the 2 Telford MPs – Lucy Allan and Mark Pritchard against the almost forgotten escalating climate and ecological crisis. Telford XR members arrived separately or in pairs and stood silently 3 metres apart from each other, and wearing homemade face masks following government guidelines for the safety of the public and themselves.

Their spokesperson pointed out the similarity of the Government response to Covid 19 and to the climate crisis saying that the Government has failed to listen to and act appropriately on the science in both crises.

Health should be prioritised over profit, they continued, and the destructive polluting industries that cause irreparable damage both to our environment and to our health, should no longer receive government subsidies which should instead be directed at green and renewable energy resources.

Their spokesperson added that there is currently no clear way out of either the COVID 19 crisis or the climate crisis but going back to life as before is a solution to neither. They said “ Extinction Rebellion is challenging the government’s inertia in creating solutions for both covid 19 and the climate emergency, and demanding a binding Citizens Assembly on how to rebuild our economy and our future. Let the people decide”.

  • No need for the nasty comments. They made their point peacefully, in a socially distant manner.

  • Extinction Rebellion is a fascist, extremist, far left domestic terrorist group backed by Russian money, billionaire criminals and extremists. The sooner they are proscribed, the better.

  • The deniers all come out at once. They either can’t be bothered to read up or are too thick to understand.

  • I do find that some people will be at every protest no matter what the protest is.

  • Well done everyone involved. A peaceful protest for a good cause. Ignore the small minded petty comments, mostly based on nothing more than prejudice.

  • I would have thought that a massive decrease in GDP would have reminded them why economic growth is important.

  • We have an extremely limited number of years to make the changes needed, and we’re going to lose a year of that to covid-19. It’s important to ensure that when we come out of that and start to rebuild the economy we do so in a way that helps with climate change. Home working should become a major part of how we work, for those jobs that allow it. Less road building, more money spent on public transport and enabling cycling. Put money into solar and wind. So many ways we could come out of this in a better way – but we need to be thinking about it now.

  • Climate emergency? You mean we haven’t previously been into and out of several ice ages? The world heats up, the world cools down.

Nothing to get stressed about greta!

  • If they’re that bored. There’s a job agency not even 100 metres away from where they’re standing.

  • They have had what they want for the last 3 months, the world stopping. Now look at the state of everyone’s mental health and the economy!
Even the leader of their cult doesn’t have solutions to what they are moaning about.

These comments.. it’s mind boggling how your generation is so degenerative.. I bet I’m younger than all of you. Your views are so naive, ignorant and quite frankly elementary. I’m 24, not a hippy and I can’t have children because of the emergency climate crisis we are in. You guys may die from old age but we.. we will die from climate change.. from your mistakes and unwillingness to admit you’ve fucked up. Wake up.
