Patients to benefit from thousands more operations

The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford has announced the opening of a brand new Planned Care Hub this summer.

This £24 million investment by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) represents a major step forward in improving access to high-quality elective care for patients across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales.

The new state-of-the-art facility boasts four modern operating theatres and additional recovery beds, allowing for over 3,500 additional day case procedures to be performed each year. This translates to significantly shorter wait times for patients in need of essential surgeries.

The Planned Care Hub is designed to provide a superior patient experience. The modern and comfortable space will offer day case procedures across various specialties, including ear, nose and throat, maxillofacial, gynecology, breast, orthopedics, and general surgery, all year round.

While construction encountered some unforeseen complexities, the new hub is nearing completion and is set to welcome its first patients in June 2024. This aligns with the Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP), a vital initiative to enhance acute hospital services and improve healthcare across the region. PRH will specialise in planned care, while Royal Shrewsbury Hospital focuses on emergency care. Both hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 urgent care services.
