Friends make up 100 last minute care packages

One school in Telford decided that they were still going ahead with their Mufti Day today, following the Government’s decision to close down all schools from this afternoon due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Friends of Redhill Primary Academy in Priorslee had originally organised a Mufti Day for Chocolate, in order for them to collect chocolate supplies for a forthcoming fundraising Easter hamper raffle.

Deciding to switch last minute, knowing that it would be impossible to run the raffle and hand out the yummy hampers due to the school closure and current restrictions, the team asked the children and parents to send in donations for the elderly and most vulnerable in their community.

“After seeing the heart breaking scenes of the elderly desperately trying to find food in supermarkets and thinking of those who have no choice but to self-isolate, we decided to spring into action and do whatever we could,” said Pru McCarney, Chair of The Friends of Redhill.

“We are currently raising funds for our own Pastoral Care building at school and were due to collect mountains of chocolate today for us to produce our hampers, but instead we have been inundated with donations and are over the moon with the generosity of parents.

“We have now packed and delivered over 100 bags filled with food and toiletries for those most in need in our local community and delivered to Age UK Telford and Wrekin.

“We hope we can put a smile on the faces of just a few of those who are struggling at the moment.”
